Use a safe, mineral-based sunscreen daily

To protect your skin, Waldorf recommends using a mineral-based sunscreen (look for active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that is SPF 30 or higher and apply it as the last step of your skincare routine every morning. “Healthy fats like those found in walnuts, flaxseeds, and avocados can help replenish your body’s ability to produce strong, healthy cell membranes, [which] can protect against environmental damage by restoring the skin barrier,” says Samolitis.
Waldorf agrees, explaining that “not eating the right healthy fats can lead to dry skin and hair, and increasing these fats in the diet can help certain skin conditions characterized by excessive dryness.” Other foods high in healthy fats for glowing skin include salmon, chia seeds, olive oil, and whole eggs.
Keep your skin microbiome balanced
Like the gut, a healthy and balanced skin microbiota is essential for maintaining healthy and balanced skin. These microscopic bacteria keep the skin hydrated and supple, fight free radicals, repel external aggressors and even protect against harmful UV rays. Avoid harsh soaps and scrubs, which can strip away the essential oils and bacteria that make up the skin’s microbiome.
