CrossFit Training Camp

Image default

CrossFit is a physical activity based on functional training, constantly varied,  adaptable to any physical state and executed at a relatively high intensity.

All the hard work has been completed, and now is the time to polish strategies, practice and play last minute! Here’s one of the first looks inside the pre-game camp with the Invictus team and Invictus Masters Jenn Ryan. Thank you, Bobby Petras, of @mastersfitnesscollective and @madapplecrossfit, for hosting our training camp in Fort Wayne, Indiana! Athletes spent the past week in the “Petras Complex” for some last-minute preparation and bonding.

Each year, the Invictus team travels to the Midwest a week early to put the finishing touches on their teamwork, solidify their strategy, and spend every waking minute together to get as close as possible (ACAP) before the Games. It’s hard work but also a fun time for athletes and coaches. This group is already particularly close, so it’s just the icing on the cake to live together in the complex during the week.

A typical training day begins with a team breakfast and a morning workout at the complex. The community offers some fantastic options for running, swimming, rowing, and just about any other outdoor activity you can think of Biathlon? so they were cover alligator fight? Check, all good there!

I went to a CrossFit Sleep-Away Camp

The best week of my adult life:” That’s how I would sum up Power Monkey Camp, a seven-day CrossFit sleepover camp for adults who like to lift heavy things. Over the week, I could work with superstar CrossFit athletes like Lauren Fisher, Mat Fraser, Chyna Cho, Alec Smith, and Dani Speegle. They are the sports equivalent of Megan Rapinoe and the Williams sisters (as we refer to those of us in the CrossFit training for them: some of the fittest humans on Earth).

Created by former American gymnast Dave Durante and stuntman Shane Geraghty, Power Monkey Camp takes place in Crossville, Tennessee. Durant describes it as a fitness retreat that combines summer camp with the opportunity to learn from some of the most elite fitness educators in the world. “It’s a week filled with guest lectures, panel discussions, yoga classes, Olympic demonstrations and expert-led activities,” he says. And in case you were inquisitive, yes, you sleep in cabins, eat in a cafe, and have plenty of activities on the lake.

Who is a suitable applicant for Power Monkey?

Once I employed up for Power Monkey, I assumed most of the other participants would be CrossFit brothers, and I was thoroughly prepared to let my inner brother shine. But I was very wrong.

Cross Fitters were all good-natured nerds who loved the sport of functional fitness (like me!) or CrossFit trainers. But not all the participants were Cross Fitters. Some were kettlebell competitors. Some were Bootcamp lovers. Therefore some were marathon runners. And approximately hadn’t been to the gym since earlier CrossFit was formed in 2000 (seriously!).

The oldest athlete remained at 81, the youngest was 17, and the average age was 43. While these numbers vary slightly from camp to camp, they underscore that “Power Monkey Camp is for anyone interested in all things fitness. , who is ready to become a better promoter,” Durante says.

What to expect from Power Monkey Camp

Look, I’ve been a locally competitive Cross Fitter for three years, I’m a certified CrossFit trainer, and I write about fitness every day, so while I was hoping to learn from camp (why else would I go?), nothing could have prepared me for how much I would know. Or the quality of the coaches you would come into contact with. I can confidently say that I have never been in a space with a group of experts who know what these trainers are doing.

Olympic weightlifter and world-class trainer Chad Vaughn gave me hands-on training on my clean (a move where you squat with a barbell and lift the weight to chest height). Olympian Shane De Freitas got up on a pull-up bar and did pull-ups with me as I told him I was a visual learner.

Mike Molly, the founder of M2 Performance Nutrition, who works with CrossFit Games athletes, looked at my food diary and told me I should probably eat more carbs. Dave Tilley DPT had dinner with me (just the two of us!) and helped me find strategies to stay sane during the CrossFit Open. And renowned rowing coach Rika Geyson completely changed my rowing.

CrossFit practice in the community; little by little; yo, you will discover that there are people with the same concerns as you who are unsatisfied with a conventional training program.
